Don't Believe the Type - calligraphy workshop
My recent interest in calligraphy, specifically brush calligraphy has found an opportunity to be satisfied. I participated in a workshop on brushpen calligraphy by Luca Barcellona - a fantastic Italian calligrapher.
The workshop was a part of a symposium Don't Believe the Type, organised by the Ship of Fools gallery, that took place in Den Haag on the 6th of October. During this day with there were workshops by Luca Barcellona, Job Wouters and Yomar Augusto, lectures by Martijn Sandberg, Alex Trochut, Yomar Augusto and the exhibition with the work of internationally known artist and designers.

This is one of the stories about how design is promoted by exclusive products, which are promoted by good design.

I ♥ you Mr. Brignell
You can't find too much information about this designer, but we all have seen his work on a daily basis. Hard to believe that one man stands behind so many recognizable logotypes!
I only found a brief review of Ian Brignell's presentation Type Club in Toronto on villatype.blogspot.com. The sentence that I was blown away by was "The most important point Ian made all night was to rough out your work fast and in multiples to get the initial gesture and energy, because you can't try and inject some energy later, it won't work" - I literally LOVE this demon (only the positive meaning) of logotype design and hand lettering.

Introducing: Animal Collective with "My Girls" and the movie clip animated by Jon Vermilyea
Animal Collective is a musical collective originally from Baltimore, Maryland, currently based in New York City. The band members met in school and started recording together in various forms of collaboration from a young age. Records released under the name Animal Collective's tracks may include contributions from any or all of the members; the lineup is not uniform. Their music is hard to define, it sound as they experiment with diverse styles and ideas from album to album. Animal Collective on MySpace
The reason why I'm posting anything on this band is the video called "My Girls", that was brought to me by my friend Florian. I immediately fell in love with both, hypnotising tune and the clip!
I'd like to also mention the man, who animated "My Girls". Jon Vermilynea is an outstanding, New York based illustrator, animator and comic book artist. Jon Vermilynea

FUNDBÜRO: Old Colour Positive Films [Slides]
Few days ago we received a set of old slides from our friend Ash. We found there photographs taken probably on a trip to Paris and few stops on the road. I choose three slides which I liked the most, scanned them to find details and get some informations on the places, where the pictures were taken. I discovered some cute lettering and messages carried by the signs. With a little help of the world wide web I found out where these photos where taken!
Picture No. 1
I found a sign on the streamer that is on pennant just below the yellow shield with a black bear. As it appeared later this is a coat of arms of Meulebeke, a town in located in Belgian province of West Flanders. The things that the first and most caught my eye were of course the signs in shop windows. Some more details below.

Picture No. 2
On this lovely picture you can see a shield of Nieuwpoort, a municipality located in West Flanders as well. After I saw these two coat of arms, I thought that possibly both pictures were taken in the capital of West Flanders, which is Bruges[fr.]/Brugge[nl.]. According to google the 'Van Mullem' (that's on the picture called 'Institute de Beaute'), the Pharmacy and 'Falleyn' (the next shop with pink awning) are still there, on Noordzandstraat :)

Here's a picture I found on panoramio of the Pharmacy and how it looks nowadays. Still has the same signboard!

Few details to enjoy the tasty resolution of slides and the retro lettering:

Picture No. 3
I choose this picture, because it was very different from the rest of slides - a little plane, particular colours and pretty fine composition.
I managed to read few words of the small sign that is placed on the bottom of the plane. Apparently the plane is the Spad VII a famous 'Vieux Charles' which was flown by Captain Georges Guynemer untill 1917, when he served with the squadron 'Les Cigognes' (the storks). 'Vieux Charles' is now conserved in Le Musee de l'Air et de l'Espace is north of Paris at Le Bourget airport. But the picture was probably taken in Salle Foch in Paris, according to a photo (same ceiling) I found on www.earlyaviator.com

FUNDBÜRO: The Allman Brothers Band
When I was listening to an online broadband from Seattle an amazing thing caught my eye. One of the best features of online radios, that I am a huge fan of, is that they show the album covers of songs they play - brilliant! That is how I noticed this beautiful lettering of A Decade Of Hits 1969-1979 album by The Allman Brothers Band, which is actually their logotype. No idea who designed it.

sunny Sunday afternoon
We spent a nice Sunday afternoon walking on the beach of Scheveningen in Den Haag. Some sun, some wind, some sand and few inspirations:

A Tower at the end of Pier van Sheveningen.

The view at De Pier and Sheveningen from the tower.

On our way back we found "Alice in Wonderland" kind of flyover in Delft.

Avant Garde neon light in the harbor of Rotterdam. How beautiful and uncommon!

MTV Identity Reboot
Yesterday, there was launched a new look of MTV, which was created by MTV's creative directors from around the world in collaboration with UK-based studio Universal Everything.
The new logo is, in fact, the old logo - but in MTV's new look, the logo remains black on a white ground - no colour, pattern or texture will ever adorn it - which is a change from MTV of old.

MTV Networks International now has a new flexible typographic navigation system for displaying onscreen information. The typeface used for this primary information is Pharma Bold Condensed by Swiss type foundry Optimo.

As well as the main programme info, more playful messages will appear in the lower third of the screen - and for this text, there is a collection of secondary brand typefaces to choose from, depending on the mood of the message. The eight secondary typefaces were selected for their expressive or emotion-inducing nature - and to add an element of fun to the onscreen identity of the channel. The faces are American Typewriter Light Italic, Balloon Bold, Bigcity Maxi, Cozzap Open, Flash ND, Futura SB Bold Italic, Sahara Bodoni and Signpainter House Brush.

Here's an example of how these will be used onscreen (excellent).

Each of the MTV idents has exactly the same 2/2 time signature – a heartbeat-like rhythm to which the MTV logo always pulsates. I present here still frames of my three favourite spots. You can watch all six of the new idents here

pop-up wedding card
My friends, Piotr and Anastazja (both creative and great people) got married on the 29th of May and the pop-up card was made for them. Congratulations once again guys!
I borrowed the idea for this card from Hiroko at Canon's Creative Park, and changed by adding a third step. I also created a type pattern of the couple's names, which would be the elementary decoration of the cake. This little couple on the top reminds a bit the real couple and 'Gorzko' is the word that everybody shout at a Polish wedding party. It means 'bitter' but basically what everyone mean is 'we want some more sweet kisses!', so the groom has to kiss the bride once again, and again, and again!

The enchanted kindergarden
The project is a result of an architectural competition for 2 kindergartens in Tromso, Norway. 70°N arkitektur "kindergartens have been built to have the possibility of variety in the use of rooms. With very simple moves one can change each room into new rooms of various sizes and functions. There are several options for combinations and joint actions of rooms and spaces.
One of the main ideas is that each base has two adjustable walls (fixed in one end, and wheels on the other) that gives the room a variety of combinations of small and large rooms. The walls are built with various shelves, drawers, blackboards, climbing partitions, puppet show sections and so on."
Fun and functional! What a lovely way to enhance the minds of kids with colours and a lot of imagination.

Aston Martin Bulldog [1980] Concept Car
I couldn't resist myself from publishing pictures of this amazing car.
Styled by William Towns, the Aston Martin Bulldog was ultimately built as a one-off testbed. Originally, it had been intended to be a limited run of about 25. It was built in the UK, but is a left-hand-drive car. It has an incredibly low height at 110 cm high, and featured a sharp, distinctive gull-wing door design. The interior uses digital instrumentation (!!!) and the rear view is delivered via a television monitor mounted on the center console (a later addition).

May we all enjoy the New and Better YEAR!
“2009. OH YEAH!” was made from confetti [small bits of paper, usually colored, thrown or dropped from a height to enhance the gaiety of a festive event, as a parade, wedding, or New Year's Eve party]. The project was photographed in different stages of creation, composed into a simple gif animation and sent to my friends.
Merry ChristmasEveryone!
“Merry Christmas” was made from a cookie dough cut into small pieces, composed and cooked in the oven. The project thaught me patience but I enjoyed it loads. Merry Christmas and a piece of the cookie for everyone!

bold design project
It's time to show something, isn't it? I've been working on the logo design for a Parisian design association called 'Bold' - three clever and young product designers. Their new website is launching soon as well. I will pass the link as soon as the site is published. Bold asked for a simple logotype and so those are the proposals i prepared! They haven't chosen yet though. We'll see how it goes... P.S. the typeface used in few of them is Spectra designed by a polish typographer, Kamil Kurzajewski. thank you :)
the PRESS
Well, well, well...
here it is! My diploma project [Children Hospital Wayfinding System] got it's "5-minutes-of-fame-spread" in the press. Visual Communication magazine (Poland).

C'est Bretagne
'Talking Head's (Gadajace glowy), 1979., Krzysztof Kieslowski
Krzysztof Kieslowski interviewed a number of ordinary Poles of different age asking them questions about who they are, what's the most important for them and what they wanted from life. The film is a harsh black and white image saying about values and dreams of people, that is why it brought me to the idea: romantic landscape of multiple portrait of minds.

My love and France
You may be Polish if...;)
1. You or someone in your family owns a car with a PL sticker proudly displayed on the back windshield and/or a custom-made European license place in the front (most likely with your name written on it)2. You have relatives who aren't really your relatives
3. You sing the same song - “100 lat” - on every occasion (weddings, birthdays, baby showers)
4. You watch soccer
5. You know very well Pope John Paul II was Polish and his name was Karol, not Carol
6. You go to Midnight Mass every Christmas Eve and keep your Christmas tree up till February.
7. You drink your wodka straight
8. When you hurt yourself, you don't say "Ouch", you say, "Awwa"
9. You don’t feel the need to add an “s” to Pierogi because you know the word is already plural and it annoys you when others do. However, you still add 'y' to already plural english words... "chipsy", "dzinsy"
10. You are convinced your pets only understand Polish
11. You are forced to listen to Disco Polo by your parents
12. You can spot Polish people like Asians can spot each other
13. When others find out you're Polish, they tell you about every Polish person they've ever known, which is most likely followed by them mispronouncing common phrases such as “czesc” or “dziekuje”
14. Your name always gets slaughtered on the first day of school
15. The thought of eating cow stomach (flaki) doesn’t gross you out
16. When you're at a stranger's house, you expect their garbage can to be under the sink

18. Once in a while, you do a big "przemeblowanie" at home
19. You always take off your shoes as soon as you step into someone else's house (even if the owner of the house insists you don't have to)
20. You celebrate your birthday AND your nameday, "imieniny"
21. You were extremely surprised to learn that weddings in other countries last hours, not days
22. When you start making up extra verses and remixes to Sto Lat, and you end up singing for 10 minutes
23. You ask for Gratis where ever you go
24. Your mamusia asks you to reuse your teabags.
25. You boast about receiving your Christmas presents one day before the rest of the world.
26. One of your older female relatives has orange/pink/purplish dyed hair and thinks they can get away with it.
27. Half a glass of vodka is a shot.
28. Your grandpa let you play with a knife/rifle/grenade he kept from the war.
29. The amount of food your family consumes over christmas could feed a Sudanese village for a decade.
